Mend Toyota Corolla Battery Electrical Start

electrical issue 1989 corolla 1300cc?

i bought a new battery for a 1989 toyota corolla 1300cc,however at times my lights don't come on and the car does'nt start at times,i would have to jump start it.i figure its the altenator or something so i'll have to get it checked,how would u help the situation.
