my peugot 206 turns over but will not start?

mysteriously one morning my key would not fit entirely into the ignition. i had to call out a vehicle recovery firm (thankfully of which i am a member). the long an short was that the cheapest fix was to cut down the key so that it would fit.fantastic this did the trick, saving me several hundred pound in replacing new ignition etc. until the following morning that is. now the engine turns over but does not fire. i don,t know whether this is connected to the ignition key problem i had previously encountered.can any one shed any light on this or come up with a solution before i have to call out the recovery people out again. i wont escape the sting next time.
