Mend Hotpoint TDC30P Dryer Heater Unit

Hotpoint TDC30P t/dryer - overheating?

The unit has developed a fault in that it overheats, switches itself off, and advises "clean filter". I have cleaned all filters without any dramatic improvement. Would a faulty heater unit (elements touching !) cause this to happen ? A positive response could save me £ 200 or more.
