replace starter rope briggs&stratton classic?

can anyone describe how i go about replacing a starter rope on a briggs&stratton classic lawnmower engine

the housing for the rope seems to be rivetted into place

It is indeed rivetted on - you will need to remove the entire cowling for access. Don't panic, it's only 3 or 4 bolts (and possibly the speed control cable).
