Mend Mountfield Pull Cord Lawnmower

Pull cord lawnmower?

I have a Mountfield lawnmower - 14 months old - had no probs with it until recently.
The motor was running fast and has been adjusted - but now I cannot start it - Im female and it seems that where it now sparks is beyond my arms reach!!!
Can the cord be shortened or is that illogical ??
