Mend Hotpoint Flashing Turn

Flashing lights on front of Hotpoint washing machine?

When I turn my machine ON all of the lights flash on and off. I then fiddle a little with the ON/OFF switch and eventually it starts washing/spinning etc. What on earth is wrong with it? Does anybody know how to fix it.
