Mend BMW 320d Knocking Side Wheel

there is a knocking noise on my 2001 bmw320d ?

there is a really loud knocking noise from my rear passenger side wheel when i drive around 15/20 mph. it comes and goes when it more or less feels like it sometimes for a few days in a row to mybe every other day. there is also black suit all over the engine and the smell of engine fumes inside the car
