Mend Peugeot 206 Speed

Peugeot 206 heater broken - Full speed or off ?

Hi,

The heater in my 206 seems to have partially borken.
It will operate only on full speed.
It seems I need to replace the rheostat or resistor block.
Can anyone point me to where these are located ?
Above the clutch ?

Cheers,
Ray.

All just be aware that I have found that there are at least two types of resister/rheator for the206gti. My daughters fellers car has climate control and has the resistor type fixed to the fan assembly that you take out in thickscientist instructions (recomend these instructions)the way to tell before you dismantle anything is if you look up from the glove box footwell (rhd model) the fan motor wil have two plugs. If this is the case you need part no 914001028 arond £80 from Gsf or if you can wait a fewdays £25 on ebay from sellers like d2pautoparts.com. when you remove the motor in it's housing you need to seperate the two by undoing the torx scew on the rear and pulling the plastic housing away from the fan can be quite stiff to remove be caredfull not to damage the fan. Once out you can then access the two torx screws hat secure the semicircular resistor to the housing.
Additional note his car had an after market gps with the disc drive in the glove box. Not sure if its a peugeot model but it can be remove without audio system removal keys by pushing from the back, accesss just about available inside the glove box then you have to remove the mounting bracket which allows access to the last torx screw in the roof of the glove box mentioned in thickscientist instruction.
hope helps

I have tried everything to get blower motor out and it will not budge

Just a little bit of background info - The fan is designed to work at full speed (4), as you select slower speeds (1-3) you basically introduce differing levels of resistance to slow the motor down, so if your blower only works on speed 4, there is most definitely a fault with the resistor pack. If you can get the exact resistor values if they are the typical appearance ones, you can get them for pence in Maplins and solder them on in some cases.

Hi folks. Replaced heater blower resistor on my 206 today. Can be done without removing glovebox-clock or anything. tilt seats flat-open both doors then lie on your back with your head in footwell. i used a headband torch- rolled my sleeve up and located and removed resistor using just one hand. fitted new one and works ok.Awkward i know but saved some messing about.

Following Thinkscientist's post, I would say that using a camera phone can help once you have the blower motor off. You can't get your head in and taking a photo can help to see how things are laid out. Also, taking out the screw on the blower motor isn't necessary as the motor comes out with the housing when it's twisted as described

Thank you Think Scientist! I have just followed your excellent guide and fixed the problem on my wife's 03 206 (non-aircon). 30quid for the part and an hour and a half later, it's all done. Brilliant. Thanks again.

Hi Thinkscientist,

Thanks for that great posting managed to fix my daughter's Pug 206 on a 53 plate. Just an observation or two. The little bolt in the blower motor doesn't need to be screwed out - her blower mtr. just sat in a plastic cradle/bracket and as you say a firm twist clockwise releases the blower motor. I did unscrew the little bolt but it doesn't seem to lock onto anything and some postings have said the small bolt isn't even there. It may be just this model.
However take care when replacing the plastic socket with power to the motor as when first assembled tried to see if thing were working and zilch nothing - thought fuses blown - no. Taking motor back out noticed one of the spade terminals
on mtr had been pushed to one side and hence not connected. Prised it more centrally and replaced power lead socket. Tried again and success - very happy daughter. Couldn't see how to take top clock panel off to help with locating rheostat as you suggest. Didn't want to force or break anything but for next time !! can you say how it's done.
Brilliant post thanks - saved a bomb.

Martin,

I have just done this fix today.
The heater blower motor is difficult to remove, I used a hammer to knock it in a clockwise direction. it only requires a quarter turn then will come out as per the haynes manual. no screw on mine either.

The heater blower resistor can be seen by removing the clock on top of the dash board, then looking through the gap on the right hand side.

I got access to the resistor by taking out the speedometer unit, then put my had through the gap, reaching for the resisitor plug.

From there you can follow the rest of the haynes manual.

The gap is very small. The only other option is to take the whole dash off to get access to the resisitor. I gave up on this option becasue it requires removal of the steering column and airbags.

i hope this helps.

I've got the same problem but am having great difficulty in removing the heater blower from its housing! I've removed the glovebox and can see the heater blower and acording to haynes manual the only screw that needs removing is non existent on mine but i've tried twisting this thing both ways and it won't budge! Anyone go any tips to help as the only option i can see is to take the whole dash apart which i really don't want to do!

The blower resistor was my fault... I bought one on E-Bay but it didn't work. Having taken it apart, I found that the component in the middle is a THERMAL FUSE and after buzzing it out, it has blown (allowing nothing through it, 100% resistance, overheated) despite being in good aesthetic order. You can get these fuses for 99p, and also buy two crimps so you can chop the old one out and crimp a new one in it's place (don't solder it, the solder may soften with the heat). Don't know the rating, though I'm going for a 144C.

The PROBLEM IS CAUSED by the pollen filter being clogged up, which reduces air flow and so too much heat accumulates back there which blows the thermal fuse. Better it blows than your centre console catching fire though!

Hi lads,
Just stripped out the glove box and followed details as laid out in the details from 'thinkscientist'. All was goingwll till i removed the resistor / rheostat......
Appears what i have been supplied by Peugeot dealeras the replacement part is somewhat different to the origial component, and it isn't 'interchangeable'.
Original device has off white / grey plastic moulding, adaptor for a six pin electrical hook up, a galvanised metal three sided cover with about 26 no.8mm size holes in it for air circulation across the thtree coil metal spring looking objects and and single resistor, all looking quite old fashioned, (my 206 is a 'S' plate).
The new device supplied to me is.... a black plastic moulding with adaptor for 5 pin electrical hook up, a metal strip about 50 / 60mm long and mostly encased in a green coloured ceramic / heat resistant mouling and with a single resistor at the end of the metal strips projectingabout 6mm out of the end of the green mouldind....
Any ideas lads? I'm pretty sure i removed the correct component (reached inside fan section housing about 200mm once the fan was removed). I'm guessing i may have an early model vehicle and been supplied a later version component? Albeit that although i have the same symptoms as you lads describe... fan works only on full speed and no other speeds, the original device i've removed doesn't show any obvious signs of failure.... no burnt out connection or anything visible.... thats is unless the resistor has failed yet shows no signs of failure?
Prompt responces appreciated lads please, this task isstarting to p...s me of now and the car is on my girl friends drive in bits!
Many thanks
Neil (Birmingham).

Thinkscientist; Thanks for this excellent bit of info. Your instructions worked a treat. (Haynes manual was nowhere). Every one who completes this job should be able to do someting unmentionable to whoever it was at Peugeot who devised this ridiculous installation.

Great instructions. Much better than the data sheet which the Peugeot dealer gave me.

Note that the screw holding the fan in place is a tx15 - the one size I did't have! Still only took about hour and a half including the trip to diy store for the right size bit.

I agree with previous post.
You need a new heater blower resistor. Common fault with many makes of vehicles. I changed one on a Laguna, usually located behind glove box. Resistor should cost around £15 from main dealer.

Go to peugeot give them your car reg and get a replacement rheostat or control resistor as they are sometimes known for the heater.

Then go home!

Make a nice cup of tea as you will be going a while!

Then get hold of a Torx 20 Screwdriver and a torch.

You will need to take out the glovebox so you may as well empty it first.

You need to take the cover off the glovebox open it but dont let it all way down just pull it out while it's still vertical otherwise it doesnt come out.

Then you need to take out the screws behind the glovebox cover with the T20 screwdriver and also if you look closely there is another screw inside the glovebox facing upwards, ( i missed that for a while! )

Ok once you have taken all of those out you should be able to push the glovebox down and out there will be some wires attached to the left hand side, detach them taking note of how they go in.

Right glovebox out!

Now you need to take out the fan blower.

SO what you need to do is stick your torch and head in behind the glovebox and if you look as if towards the central console but from behind you will see a round looking object with one screw in.

You need to take that screw out and then turn the thing clockwise. ( This will be really really tight so you need to twist hard, it took me a good few attempts )

Once you have dislodged it there is a clip that goes into the top of the fan for the power, you must take that out and then pull the blower out.

Once you have done this you can reach inside the air duct and you will feel the rheostat. Grab hold of it, twish it to unlock it from its place and pull it towards you.

Once you have done that, then just unplug it out of the socket and then plug the new one in, then push it back to where it was and twist it back to lock it into place.

Put the fan back in and plug the wire in making sure you dont get the wire caught in the air duct.

Screw fan screw back in.

Replace glovebox!

your done!

PS one thing i would say to do is open the central console lid where the clock is and on the right of the clock you will see a red wire going down into a circular hole. Thats the rheostat so it is a good way of making sure you see how it is lodged in and that you lodge it back in correctly before closing the air duct with the fan

I hope this helps!

It will take u a couple of hours at least!
