sunroof vw sharan not working?

hi all i own a vw sharan 1996 sunroof has decided to stop working ,sometimes goes in & out then stops totally have to manually rewind in i thought motor was problem so bought a used one still same problem now only get clicking noises when i press roof control any ideas
