simpson top loader brake?

I have replaced bearings and seal. now when machine tries to operate the brake locks on. I am imagining that the brake needs to be assembled with the drum in a certain part of the rotation cycle. is this right or perhaps the brake motor is broken. BTW this an Australian sold unit with a brake band on the gearbox.

Hi Lincoln Appliance, thanks for your prompt reply. I was wondering what your thoughts are about taking off brake mechanism rather than wasting more money than I originally planned on this 10+ year old machine. Does it only slow drum for when you open lid or does it have something to do with agitation cycle ( stopping drum for reverse )

No there is no special position for the drum when fitting the brake arm. When in the wash cycle the brake should be released & locking the brake band on the gearbox. Some models release the brake for a short time while filling to allow bowl to rotate slowly. Brake releases (is pulled away by the solenoid) from the gearbox & then motor starts for the spin cycle. If brake is locked on & gearbox will not rotate then either brake release solenoid is faulty or there is no power getting to it.
