A black soot substance that is destroying all my
white clothes. I own a Maytag Performa. What
could this be?

I have the same problem, ours is a gas dryer. I believe there is some seal failure and it is letting lint in on the burner. Im going to replace mine for safety reasons and let alone all the clothes its runied.
