My black and decker hedge trimmer used to work quite well, now instead of cutting the hedge it seems to be acting like a toothless dog and takes forever to go through even new growth.

You can try filing the blades with a file and see if sharpening the blades will help. Otherwise, the Black and Decker hedge trimmers run inexpensively so it may be worth replacing it.

Might the blades be gummed up from dried sap and dirt?
Mine get this way from time to time - a squirt of WD40 soon has it humming again.
