On my Golf the window operating mechanism is carried on a metal plate - runners, wheels, brackets and winding cables - it comes as a complete unit for about £50 - The motor for it is a separate item. I have had two fail on my car and it looks to be extremely difficult to "mend" a broken winding cable.
