Ford Escort 55D,2001(Yreg)ex PO?

My sons 2001,ex PO Escort 1.8D van is very hard to start on cold day,we just keep turning over and over and it just abouts starts.34,00miles.Any ideas where to start..

mine has the same problem,i changed the glow plugs,fuel and air filter,checked the power to the glow plugs,seems to start better if when turning over from cold i put the throttle to the floor and let it off soon as it fires,not a cure i no but could help with fnding what the problem is,mines 1996 model

sounds like your glow plugs aint working,could also be low compression but at that mileage i doubt it.
