How to install a new pull string ceiling light socket?

Help! I only have a light socket hanging by wiring from the ceiling in my basement or I should say the socket no longer works. My basement is old, dank and creepy without lighting. Please! Would like info on how to remove old socket and install new one? Thanks!

seek professional help
electricity is very dangerous if you do not know what you are doing
as a temporary measure, buy a long extension lead plus a motor car inspection light on a lead and use that in a ground floor mains socket.
this will give you temporary lighting for around £15 to £20
