actually it was the element, which i bought online for £9.49 and is was an easy repair even for a novice like me

Impossible to answer this question from the other side of the internet. It may be the element but it could also be bad wiring or faulty control switch. Only way to give a correct answer would be to test the full circuit with a multimeter to find the actual fault. Otherwise you may buy an element and it may not fix the problem & you will have wasted your money.
