have techwood AEDVDRS7 DVD recorder,wont record using the Timer?

I have an Phillips DVDR 880 DVD Recorder It plays audio cds ok but when It comes to DVDS It will play some DVD movies when I record somthing onto a recordable disc It records but when you stop It It goes back the menu screen and thats It when I want to watch what I have recored the front panel on the recorder just flashes I eject the disk pop It back In and It says EMPTDISC It really annoys me when I try again after playing audio cds It will suddenly come on then I play It and eject the disck pop It back In and It says again EMPTY DISC do you think the laser need replacing I do hope so I really love this machine I don't want another one really can It be serviced anywere I live I live In the West Midlands I do hope you can repair them I don't want to lose this machine thank you.
