Techwood TV Recorder?

I have a Techwood 80GB TV / Freeview recorder which will not start. You switch on and it just sticks on the 'Starting' screen.
I have had the hard drive out and although it is formatted with a file system that windows does not recognise, I am sure it is not the hard drive at fault.
Has anybody got any ideas how to fix!!
