fuel gauge reads wrong?

hi i have just bought a vauxhall combo van and the fuel gauge reads empty even though i have filled the tank and the fuel light comes on but when you go over a bump or a pot hole it goes up to the correct amount if any one knows what is wrong i would be very gratefull for sum advise

Take wire at sending unit and unplug to see if dash gauge moves either to full or empty ....
take wire and ground it and it should move either to full or empty ....in most cases if gauge on dash doesn`t move in ether direction while doing this the gauge on dash is faulty ........key might need to be on on some models ......
