what makes a/c window units leak in your home?

My sister has a window unit and it drains inside her house,she drilled a small hole in the housing(outside the window) to help it drain, and she tilted it back more, but, it won't stop draining excess water inside her home.This happened to me once, but it was a long time ago and I think I just bought a new one. Thank you for your advise.
