Mend Could Dishwasher Stuck

What could cause a dishwasher to get stuck in the middle of a wash?

Occasionally my dishwasher will stick during the wash cycle and I'll wake up hours later with it still running. I can advance the timing knob by hand some and it will then fish the wash correctly. Is this an easy fix?
