data control knob?

during the operation of turning the data control knob it is not possible to switch the cooker on. When it does
decide to respond the oven setting goes on high and cannot be turned down. The cooker has to be turned off at the main socket. Does anyone know if the problem can be fixed or do I have to scrap the whole cooker.
