how can I fix my handwheel from locking?

sewing machine is a pfaff 1222e the handwheel will turn but then locks and won't turn anymore

My machine has the same problem. I see a split nylon gear when I removed the bottom plate. Apparently this is a common problem with this machine. Hope I can get advise on replacement.

Hello Jean,
Definitely sounds like you have a small piece of thread stuck in the raceway, that will be strong enough to hold the machine back, force the wheel backwards to see if you can free it off, if the balance wheel turns when you have the stop motion off as if to wind a bobbin then that would be the most likely problem
