engine dies when I engage PTO switch for mower deck?

I have a kenmore 917.273220 24 hp riding lawnmower. I've had to jump the push in interlock switch for the clutch/brake system just to get it to run the tractor around the yard. When I hit the large red button to engage the mower it dies usually with a deafening backfire that send the neighborhood dogs into a frenzy. any ideas?

check your seat switch or your trans switch all are tied to the starting and pto clutch circut also your brake switch is in the same circut hope this helps
