I have an old Craftsman 3.7 18" (Poulan 3700)that I put a 24" bar on it also says to use a half pint of oil per gallon of gas. It does smoke a bit but I would stick with the 16:1 mix

i have a 3.7 18" craftsman that is about 20 years old. ON the chainsaw itself says use half a pint of oil to 1 gallon of gas. which would be 8 ounces of oil to 128 ounces of gas. But being as it is old as yours is, i use 25:1 ratio for less smoke. still runnin great!

I have a Craftsmen 3.7 C.I with a 24" bar that saids 40:1 and after burning it up and having rebuilt for $550.00 I now run it at 32:1 with no problem.
If you think it past 30 years old i would try it out at 25:1 to see how how much smoking it dose, then move up to 32:1. but would not go to 40:1.

25:1 ratio petrol to a quality semi synthetic two stroke oil such as Oregon will suit you fine.
