how can i fix my L reg 1.8 golf gl?

i have put a new battery in and it was ok for about a week but now it won't start

This sounds like the alternator isn't charging the battery, but to check it you need to get the car started - either by push or jump leads. Anyway if you can do so, you need to use a voltmeter connected across the battery terminals - and it will register about 14.2 volts if all is well.
