Mend Volkswagen MK4 Golf Tdi 99 Headlight Main Beam

How can I fix headlight problem?

Suddenly both the main beam headlights on my '99 MK4 Tdi Golf have stopped working, so driving on dipped. The fuses are ok and the bulbs look ok from front. Am reluctant to remove battery etc to check bulbs as both failing at once seems unlikely. Is it possible the fault lies in the 'flasher dipping switch' stalk.

Is it usual for them both to come on again? Last night without any interference they started working again,....hopefully they'll stay that way for my next week long trip!

it is not unusual to have two bulbs go at the same time
