cant connect my new router to existing pc?

i have an old pc with a broadbank connection & have just bought a laptop and a router. Easy set up instructions for the router state i must connect to computer with existing internet connection before setting up WI-FI for the laptop. Only problem is the current lead from the modem to the pc goes into a USB port where as the router has an ethernet connection. HELP!

Use the new laptop to do the setup. It will have an Ethernet connection. Then buy a PCI Ethernet or wireless card for the old computer if you wish to carry on using it.
