My external HD is detecting but I dont c it on the computer, why?

can anybody help me with this:
I have my external HD, it is detecting on the computer but I don't see it when I open My computer; and it says that the device is working properly, WHY?
my ext. HD is new one, and your answer gave the solution

Is it a new hard drive.If so you might have to go into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disc Management.From there you should be able to add the new device create a partition and format it.Then it should show up in My Computer.
