I have a Vauxhall SC303 car radio which emits static noise?

My Dad's Vauxhall is doing this, the drivers side (UK) on the right is hissing and cracking like crazy, intermits less and increases more all the time.

Is still there when playing a tape, or even turning down the volume of the radio.

Can you advice to what could be wrong?

Trace co-axial lead from arial. I found a broken wire in a contact block which was creating the static, especially on the MW.

Is the noise continous ?

Can you adjust the volume OF THE NOISE ?

Is the near side ok and the left side hissing ?
