battery light stays on after the keys are taken out?

my car battery light stays on after ive taken the keys out and runs the battery down what could the problem be. its a 1.2 corsa r reg

More than likely it's a fault inside the alternator. Have seen a few with the light only just visible and giving the same fault as yours.
A new unit is the best option.
