When I turn on my IBM Thinkpad laptop - it reacheds a stage where a padlock appears in the top left hand corner. This I think is intimating that the laptop may be locked ?
The laptop was working fine - and then this appeared out of nowhere - would be delighted if anyone can help

You may have had a couple of error messages first. Sounds like the back up battery has gone. Go to the Lenovo website, you can trace the error codes and they give the procedure to unlock. The manual will tell you where the battery is but is under a panel underneath, a small disck taped to the underside (look for black/red wires). The Lenovo site is very helpful.
