Visit www.fixed4free.com under household appliances/vacuum cleaners page 32 on the same problem with DC04STDUK. Adge's answer is spot on, including the frayed cable being the culprit! and yes, a small tab on the yellow button snapped as I removed it - but a new button has got to be cheap.

Try this link, I just did to reconnect a loose switch. I broke the clip prying the button off but it still works - you might want to try the drilling a hole technique (read down the page).
