I have a big problem. I would put in any kind of game and it would start reading it. Then it would stop. Next it would read it again then stop. Finnily it would say disc read error!
Hi I had a similar problem with an early "fat" PS2 I took it apart and replaced a tiny plastic piece which drives the laser up and down the worm drive ,they don't cost much and it is very nice feeling to save money and fix it yourself !

How old is your PS2, and how much play have you had out of it? Some early PS2's are suffering from problems with the laser now, exp. if you are a heavy gamer. Cleaning the laser will help, but there is not much else you can do except replace the console...
