The main detergent cup lid will not stay closed. The lid to the cup springs back open and it is not broken in any other form. Is there any way to fix this on my own? This is a GE Nautilus; I think it is around a 2000 model and the number found on the inside top of the door is 165D5450P004.
Norm - you were right on. I did the same thing and it seems to be working now. THANK YOU!
A little more info for others trying this at home - the white post sits under the timer assembly. Remove the tape and the black plastic cover to expose the 2 screws that hold the timer assemble in place. Remove the screws on the assembly and move it aside. Then you will have full and easy access to the post and spring.

I just had the same problem. Inside the door (under the timer) there's a spring that goes from the latch mechanism to a plastic post that's molded into the door assembly. The plastic post had broken off so the spring was just dangling. I drilled a small hole in the post and inserted a 4/40 screw to support the spring. Not sure how long it will last, but for now it's working OK.
