I can't set a straight stitch on brother boutiques 761?

Hello Leslie,
Have you made sure you have the stitch width dial on 0 and set your stitch length properly? How is your stitch coming out when you sew?
If you have had the machine on zig zag the slider on the top of the machine mase be stuck due to lack of oil, take the top off and put some very thin oil on the slider, you will soon see it, it is about the middle of the top of the machine, try that and see what happens, if none of the above works let me know with more information of how the machine is sewing.
