had exactly the sam problem, was a thermal fuse located in series with the element. Cost 60-70p to replace, but make sure you replace the thermal fuse with a fuse with the same rating

had same problem and still have i changed thermostat which is located on top of heater element under cover on back cost me 11 pounds but still dont work no heat gonna buy entire heating element complete with thermostat for 38 pounds now and try that. does anyone know if there is a safety cut out switch on these machines because that may be the prob ????
