Item works, runs, but not in colour, why?

I have a VHS recorder player, but when playing my coloured tape, it comes out in black and white on my TV, why?

Assuming you are using a standard VCR (not SVHS).
If the VCR is connected to the TV via Scart, check that the TV's scart input is not set for an SVHS signal. Often the scart socket is dual purpose and easily switched to expect the wrong type of signal.
