I have an Oreck XL. I have changed the belt, but the brush won't rotate and the belt burns. I've tried several times and it works for one vacuum session, but the next time I turn it on, same problem. Do I need to oil a part or clean something?
It sounds like your brush/roller bearings are bound up. Try turning the roller without the belt installed. If it's hard or impossible to turn, replace it before reinstalling the belt.
If it's turning free, then you need to make sure the motor is running. That can be determined by whether the vacuum sounds like it's running or not. If not, replace motor.

I have the exact same problem. Funny thing is, I never had this problem before I took it in for maintenance...burning rubber smell from fan belt does not occur when the bottom plate is off and machine is upside down. Spins perfectly until I put plate back on and put it on the floor. Low pile, high pile, hardwood, still does it. Took it back and they said I needed to replace the fan belt (which was brand new). They replaced fan belt. Problem began again after first use. Hate to sound paranoid, but do "repairers" every "fix" it so you have to buy another one???
