If it sounds like somebody hammering on the pipes when the boiler fires up, and is much worse when the heating is switched on it is probably the thermostat. If this is gone the boiler fires up but the pump does not turn on causing the pipes to bang. the thermostat is located, looking inside from the front, on the right hand side near the bottom at the back.
