Could be a partially seized steering column UJ, the one in the engine bay, a good spray with WD40 or similar and some use will normally sort it. Diagnosis by lubrication- if it doesnt fix the problem then its something else.

If your battery light is on then check your fan belt, if not then check your P.A.S reservoir fluid level, if it`s low then top up and check for leaks.
