You do not say the make of the machine - but no great matter...

A powerful motor is very likely to have brushes - at the rear end of it - perhaps you might look again.

Lack of smell suggests that the brushes have probably not failed and also that the motor windings have not burned out.

You might suspect the motor's start/run capacitor as a culprit.
