Our Easyglide 2200 iron failed shortly after switching on. I can usually repair things and had modified a standard screwdriver to fit the fiendishly designed screw head that appeared to hold on the backplate. Simple! I thought as I took out the screw but, nope, the back cover will NOT come off. Manufacturers win again. I will however resort to destructive brute force if necessary just to diagnose the fault which is probably the heating element.

You are not capable Edward - for several years now irons have been made so that they're impossible to repair - you have to destroy them to get inside them - it's a safety thing - the manufactures love it because they sell more irons.
Nobody is capable of repairing a modern iron - I blame the EU and the safety culture.
