Flame rite fire won't come in?

I was given a flame rite fire & surround but cannot get it to work at all? I've checked all bulbs & they all work when put into a lamp to check and I put the switch just inside the door on & the one at the back. All that happened twice was a small flash of light from 1 of the bulbs then nothing? I've also tried to reset remote as suggested on here, when back was taken off I saw a circle with a line in it not a slide switch? They said to turn to left all the way then right etc but when I turned it to the left it just turns all the time? So I'm completely lost as to what to do & am seriously considering throwing it out? If anyone can give me clear advice I'd be very grateful indeed? Thank you very much.
Model - Solar flare 50852
It's got 4 lights on the top of fireplace, 2 on either side.
Square shape but front section is like a wide triangle without the top part. Has pebbles & chrome colour facade.
Think it's a limestone surround. Sorry but that's the best way to describe it.
