Mend Hoover Wash Dial

Have 2nd hand older Hoover 550MA. Pull out dial?

Is the wash selection dial that you turn around then supposed to pull out? It won't pull out. Can I fix this? I can't see anywhere to just pull it out with pliars. Can't afford another one :( Someone gave me this one .... grrrr probably just saved them a trip to the tip.
