Cistern lid, how to put it on?

I've had to take the lid off the cistern of a rocca toilet with a pull up cistern but can't get the rod up through the hole again to put the screw on top

Double loop some nylon sewing cotton around the rod feed the cotton through the cistern lid as you replace the lid pull the rod into the cistern lid parking position wrap cotton around a screw driver, pencil or something that stops the rod dropping put screw on rod clip or leave the cotton job done.
