Mend Turn Auto Switch

How do I turn on the auto switch?

I have a master plug immersion timer & want to turn it to auto but every time I press the switch it turns it either on or off but not to auto??????

If its the square one with the overide switch on the side "up" is on. "down" is auto,for it to work in auto the pegs on the dial need to be altered, pushing them backwards at times required
