are they melting or breaking up, if breaking after a couple of years it now seems to be par for the course, if melting you would need to get it checked as it must be reaching very high temps.

That will probably be a dish-washing machine then... not a clothes washer.

They heat the water with an electric element - a thermostat regulates the temperature - the thermostat may be defective - or some control circuitry...

Best let an expert look at it.
