Dictaphone phone conversation recording connections?

Please advise how to connect the recorder adaptor block and phone cables in order for the dictaphone to be plugged in to record the conversations.
Which ever way I connect them, the end result is no dial tone or sound in the phone handset - yet the short phone cable and adaptor block look fine.
