Hoover AAA 1600. How do I remove the back plate to get inside?

I think I have a blocked pump in my washing machine as it gets stuck half way through washer cycles but I can't remove the back panel to get into the back of the machine to check because the screw/bolt things just go round and round when I try to unscrew them. Is ther a method to this that I'm missing that is really obvious?
